The aim of the NIGHTINGALE project is to develop an integrated multi-toolkit for emergency medical response.

This technology will bring together numerous aspects which are involved in the management of medical emergency, which are at the service of emergency medical services and non-medical civil protection agencies (firefighters, police and personal search and rescue, but also volunteers and citizens) and which will work towards the renewal of pre-hospital support and triage.

The first official meeting of the partners of the NIGHTINGALE project took place on October 26th and 27th, 2021.

The project’s coordinator is ICCS Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, a Greek computer science research institute.

The objectives

  • Upgrade evaluation of injured and affected population (triage) using digital identification, traceability, fast diagnosis, continuous monitoring, and accurate classification of medical conditions

  • Optimise pre-hospital life support and damage control and enhance utilisation of assets, resources and capacities using AI-based solutions

  • Enable shared response across emergency services and communication between emergency teams and with victims by developing augmented reality tools for first responders

How will they be achieved

The NIT-MR (the novel integrated toolkit for medical emergency response) will be at the service of emergency doctors, non-medical civil protection personnel, volunteers, and citizens.

Before this toolkit is fully rolled out, it will be validated with extensive testing, training, and validation in the framework of a rich training - in exercises, laboratory integration tests, small-scale field tests, and full-scale field validations.

This toolkit will work towards enhancing emergency medical response and mass incident management.

The role of Cittadinanzattiva

Cittadinanzattiva works among communities and social groups who contribute to social resilience. Therefore, CA will bring unique expertise to the project; a citizens viewpoint.

  • CA will also bring our experience to the development of materials for practices and approaches, to ensure that the tools that will be developed within the project (for example an APP) are useful and usable by citizens.

  • CA will participate in the analysis and identification of solutions that improve effective public engagement.

  • CA will be involved in the exercises by promoting citizen participation.

  • And finally, CA will participate in the dissemination and communication of the results of the project in Italy and Europe.
